The Sports Section - 2013 - The Year in Sports

In doing this review each year, I'm amazed at how much I've forgotten about who the winners were in major sporting events during the year.  Here's a nudge in case you forgot, too.


January -

BCS Championship Game - Alabama defeated Notre Dame 42-14.

Australian Open Tennis - Nova Djokovic and Victoria Azarenka were singles champions.

February -

Super Bowl XLVII - Baltimore Ravens over San Francisco 49ers, 34-31 - the first game pitting two brothers against each other as head coaches of the opposing teams.

Daytona 500 - Jimmie Johnson took the checkered flag.  Danika Patrick was the first female driver to win the pole position.

March -

NCAA March Madness - Louisville defeated Michigan 82-76.

April -

The Masters Golf Tournament - Adam Scott won on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff over Angel Cabrera.

May -

The Kentucky Derby - ORB was the winner.

The Preakness Stakes - Oxbow wins, ending any Triple Crown threat.

Indianapolis 500 - Tony Kanaan wins.

June -

Belmont Stakes - Palace Malice is the winner.

NBA Championship - Miama defests San Antonio 4 games to 3.

Stanley Cup - Chicago Blackhawks over the Boston Bruins 4 games to 2.

French Open Tennis - Singles champions are Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams.

July -

Wimbledon Tennis - Andy Murray scored an emotional victory for Great Britain and Marion Bartoli won the women's title.

The Open Championship (British Open) - Phil Mickelson wins by 3 over Henrik Stenson.

Tour de France - Great Britain's Chris Froome wins the 100th edition of cycling's greatest race.

August -

PGA Championship - Jason Dufner by 2 over Jim Furyk.

September -

U. S. Open Tennis - Rafael Nadal wins the men's singles, Serena Williams repeats as women's champion.

America's Cup - Oracle Team USA wins in one of sport's greatest comebacks, climbing back from an 8-1 deficit to defeat Emirates Team New Zealand 11-8.

Cleveland Indians Clinch Wild Card Playoff Spot - the first since 2007.

October -

World Series - Boston Red Sox win 4 games to 2 over the St. Louis Cardinals.

November and December - college and pro football dominates the schedule.
