The Youth Services Department needs some helping hands this summer. If you're a high school student (entering grades 9-12) and would like to assist our staff with programs, please come to the Youth Services
Department to complete an application. Volunteers will be contacted on an as-needed basis throughout June, July and August. This is a great way for teens to earn service hours! Deadline for completed applications is Friday, June 1.
If you read library ebooks, you have probably had the experience of looking for an author or a title--maybe even a really popular series--and the library doesn't have it. If you have asked staff why we don't offer it, you have learned that often, no matter how much we would like to, we are not allowed to buy those ebooks. Why? Several major publishers refuse to allow libraries to lend their ebooks, even though we continue to lend print copies of the same titles.
If you would like to see more ebooks at your library, please go to ebooksforlibraries.com and sign the petition. When the site reaches its goal of 10,000 signatures, they will be mailed to the "Big Six" publishers. This petition, created by Topeka County & Shawnee County Public Library, is bringing together libraries and patrons in hopes of improving access to ebooks.
