Book Summaries:

Locked Rooms: A Mary Russell Novel
by Laurie King -- 2005
Mary Russell and her husband Sherlock Holmes are stopping in San Francisco after a long journey to India and the Far East. While in California she will settle her deceased family’s estate. It’s a troubling and difficult task for Mary as she is forced to face the mysteries of her childhood. Fans will love this new episode in the series!

The Jungle Law
by Victoria Vinton -- 2005
This novel is a wonderful fictional biography of Rudyard Kipling’s years living in Vermont, where he wrote The Jungle Book. The author links the sophisticated Kiplings with a poor neighboring farm family whose young son is both fascinated and confused by the writer’s unbridled imagination. A literary gem!

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
by Jonathan Safran Foer
Oskar Schell is a precocious nine year old who embarks on a quest through New York City to find a matching lock to a mysterious key left behind by his father who was killed at the World Trade Center on September 11. Written with poetic prose and heartbreaking insight, this book, like Martel’s Life of Pi and Haddon’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime, is a unique peek into the emotional life of an unconventional child.

The Ice Queen
by Alice Hoffman
While trying to swat a fly, the life of the novel’s unnamed heroine is altered when she is struck by lightning. Emotionally frozen since childhood, this self-proclaimed Ice Queen becomes fascinated with Lazarus Jones, a reclusive man who cheats death by surviving a brutal lightning strike. Fluidly written and rich in metaphor, Alice Hoffman does not disappoint.

Same Sweet Girls
by Cassandra King -- 2005
This new title from the author of Sunday Wife makes you want to call your best friend and have a long chat. Six college friends convene twice a year to gossip, drink wine, and lend moral support. At the summer gathering the "nicest" Girl is crowned queen in a ceremony complete with throne, scepter, and flowing robe. Gourd artist Corinne, Julia, the governor's wife, and Lanier, a registered nurse are the mainstays of the SSG's. As each deals with her personal life's journey, the SSG's burn up the phone lines or travel long ways to be there for each other. When Corrine seems to be languishing, the friends pull together to help her make the decision about what course her illness will take. If you're looking for some laughs or a good cry, look no further than the Same Sweet Girls.

Nights of Rain and Stars
by Maeve Binchey -- 2004
Binchey's latest novel is set in the exotic locale of Aghia Anna, a small Greek island village, where four foreign tourists soon unwillingly face personal issues left behind back home. This small group, suddenly bonded by a tragic boating accident, lean on one another for understanding and support, proving that sometimes life's best changes begin with strangers. Another engaging story from this beloved Irish writer.

The Forest Lover
by Susan Vreeland -- 2004
Emily Carr is a young woman defying the Victorian boundaries of her life in turn of the twentieth century British Columbia. Instead of settling down in the upper class, white Vancouver society of her family, she roams the wilderness and native villages of the region to paint their beauty and culture. Vreeland's fictionalized account of this real life Canadian painter, naturalist, and icon is dramatic, intelligent, and captivating. A book club favorite!

Birds of a Feather
by Jacqueline Winspear -- 2004
Maisie Dobbs returns in this new title by Jacqueline Winspear as the young woman, established now as a private investigator/psychologist, must locate a missing business tycoon's daughter. Even though the girl has a history of running away from home, Maisie knows that there is more to her disappearance. This award winning series, set between the wars in England, will surely please readers of historical mysteries.
