Introducing automatic renewals, timelier overdue notices

To help make managing your library accounts a little easier, the Westlake Library is introducing a couple of changes.

Automatic renewals: Each day when the library closes, a computer program will check the system for items that were due that day and will attempt to renew them. Each card holder with successful auto-renewals will receive an emailed list of their renewed items along with the new due dates. Starting date: Monday, January 29, 2018.

Timelier overdue notices: To remind you of items that could not be auto-renewed, the library will send the first overdue notice on the day the item becomes overdue instead of waiting until the third day after the item was due. Starting date: Tuesday, January 30, 2018.

More renewals: Most library items can be renewed up to six times, if they are eligible for renewal and do not have holds. This change was introduced a few weeks ago, and has been well received.

More about automatic renewals:

  • All patrons' items will be checked for renewal on their due dates, but auto-renew notices can only be sent via email. If you would like to change your notifications to email, instead of telephone or text message, library staff will be happy to help.
  • Even with automatic renewals, everyone is encouraged to check My Account regularly in the online catalog. Some items cannot be renewed.
  • The system cannot renew items automatically if another user has a hold on the title, the borrower's account is blocked, or if the item is non-renewable. Express books and magazines are examples of non-renewable items, as are items borrowed via SearchOhio or Interlibrary Loan.
  • The system can only attempt renewal on the day the item was due. Once an item becomes overdue, the system can't renew it automatically.
  • Automatic renewals can only be done on non-digital items -- physical materials that you check out from the library. Each digital provider -- such as OverDrive and RBdigital -- has its own rules and methods for renewing or re-requesting digital titles.
