What's Trending? (Dec. 5-10)

Welcome back everyone!  December is officially here, but the weather is surprisingly mild for this time of year.  Whether you're begging for snow or enjoying the sight of the grass for a few more precious days, I hope you'll find something fun here at Let's Talk Trending!

  • December 5th: Grab your bathbombs and scented candles--today is National Bathtub Party Day!  While we don't suggest having an actual party in the tub (it can get crowded and even a little unsafe), we do recommend celebrating the day by skipping the boring old shower and doing something more relaxing.  If you don't have any bathbombs handy, why not check out one of these crafting books to help you make your own?  Or even make some for your friends--a Christmas gift they are sure to appreciate!
  • December 6th: Everyone loves Santa!  But, do you know about the real-life saint who inspired our favorite red-suited gift giver?  That would be St. Nicholas!  So, on St. Nicholas Day, why not take a little bit of time to learn about this fascinating man?  Looking for a place to start?  Try this book: The Saint who would be Santa Claus: The True Life and Trials of Nicholas of Myra.  Want to know how to celebrate the day?  Have your children leave out their slippers or shoes and fill them with treats in the night--so when they wake up in the morning, there are some delightful surprises from St. Nicholas.  This is a reference to stories about the saint, where he would give gold coins to those in need.
  • December 7th: On a bit more serious note, December 7th is Pearl Harbor Day.  In this tragic attack, more than 3000 Americans were killed or wounded.  This was the deciding moment when our country officially joined World War II.  Honor those we lost by reading about Pearl Harbor or donating to a veteran organization on this day.
  • December 8th: Grab your steampunk gear or your futuristic cosplays because today is Pretend to be a Time Traveler Day!  Pick your time period and get into character.  Are you from the future or the past?  Is today's technology some sort of black magic or pathetically primitive?  And what will you tell the people back in your own time about your discoveries?  Will you tell them at all?  No self-respecting time traveler should be without a guide book, so whenever you're from, make sure you stop by the library to pick this up!  If you'd rather just experience the thrills of time travel from the comfort of your chair, then try The Time Machine by HG Wells.  Prefer more of a scientific approach?  Try Time Travel: A History by James Gleick.
  • December 9th: You don't have to tell me twice!  December 9th is National Pastry Day!  Support your local bakery with a delicious treat.  Or, come pick up a cookbook and learn to make your own!  Perfect your baking skills just in time for the holidays!  Be the most popular person at the party (who doesn't love a baker?)
  • December 10th: Today, we celebrate a underappreciated part of the library.  Without it, you wouldn't be able to find anything.  What is it?  The Dewey Decimal System, of course!  It's Dewey Decimal System Day!  Can you imagine how hard it would be to find books if we organized them in some other way?  Color of spine, size, how much we liked them?  The Dewey Decimal system takes all the complications out of that, and organizes our whole collection so that you can always find what you're looking for.  Check out a book and read all about it!
