Lexile and Accelerated Reader searches in the Discovery Catalog

The Discovery Catalog offers a couple of approaches for parents, teachers and students who need to limit searches to ranges of Accelerated Reader levels or Lexile scores.

1) View all titles in a specific range

Lexile and Accelerated Reader toolsSearch boxes at the bottom left of the catalog home page help find all titles in a specific range of AR levels or Lexile scores.

Enter the bottom and top of the range in one of the boxes and click Search. The results will list everything in that range that has an assigned Lexile or AR level.

You then may use the search limits on the left side of the results page to narrow your results according to various “facets” such as subject, author and material type.

2) Search by keyword for titles with Lexile scores or AR levels

Search Limits menuIf you need materials about a certain subject or topic, use the Search Limits menu (first menu next to the Home button, under the library logo) to select “Accelerated Reader (all levels)” or “Lexile (all ranges),” and then enter your keywords in the search box.

Your search results will be limited to matching titles that have an assigned AR level or Lexile score. The search limits or “facets” on the left side of the results page can be used to further limit the AR level or Lexile range as needed. (Last image, below right, shows facet selections.)

Instructions for using search limit facetsIf you’re searching for materials for preschool and elementary school children, try the Kids Catalog

The Search Limits menu there allows selection of a specific AR grade levels and Lexile ranges broken down by 100s.

If your child is reading at a more advanced level, you might want to use the main Discovery Catalog for a larger selection, including young adult and adult materials.

3) Just search!

Whenever titles in any search results contain a Lexile score or AR reading level, boxes for AR grade levels and Lexile ranges in the left column will allow you to narrow any results down to appropriate materials.

If you need assistance or a demonstration of how these work, ask a librarian!
