127th Anniversary The library celebrated the 127th Anniversary of its founding by treating visitors to sugar cookies and a display of historical photos and Leonard Porter's own book collection.

Customer Appreciation Week The library showed its appreciation to library users with special programs and giveaways.

Christina's Corner 2011 Children created paper doves which were then hung in Christina's Corner on the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

Meet the Wright Brothers The Wright Brothers (really re-enactors from NASA) discussed their groundbreaking discoveries that led to man's first successful flight.

Experiment Stations Kids performed experiments illustrating a variety of scientific principles.

Solar Cooking A representative of the Cuyahoga Solid Waste District showed teens how to make a working solar oven.

Solar Astronomy Library visitors were invited to view the sun through a special telescope.

Spectroscopy: Science of Light and Matter "Roy G. Biv" taught kids in two different age groups about light and matter through a variety of examples.

Battle of the Bands Four local bands competed to win time at a recording studio and the right to sell the finished product on iTunes in the library's first teen 'Battle of the Bands.'

Friends Second Annual Spelling Bee Several teams competed in a hard-fought contest to be the Westshore's best spellers.

Cinco de Mayo Kids ages 3-5 celebrated Cinco de Mayo with songs, dances, stories and a pinata!

Garden Club Tree Donation The Westlake Garden Club observed Arbor Day by donating and planting a Sugar Tyme crabapple tree at Westlake Porter Public Library. The tree was donated by Cahoon Nursery.

Star Wars Family Fun Day II The Rebel Legion and the 501st Brigade returned to the library to meet and greet fans of all ages (some dressed in Star Wars gear themselves!).

Scribblemonster Families enjoyed a special Friday evening concert by children's performers Scribblemonster during National Library Week.

Volunteer Appreciation 2011 Westlake Porter Public Library recognized its mamy faithful volunteers and named its Myrna Chelko Volunteer Award recipient at a reception in April.

Library Staff Member Recognized Reference Associate Sue Bennis received a plaque and flowers from Duane Thomascik of the 90th Division Association in recognition of assistance in finding the surviving family of a local World War II soldier whose dog tags were found in France.

The International Year of Astronomy WPPL celebrated the International Year of Astronomy by unveiling a breathtaking image of our galaxy's center created by merging images from three telescopes. The image will be on permanent display in the library.
