back in time to a small town in Kansas during the Depression in 1936. Imagine riding a boxcar and hopping off just as it slows down in Manifest, Kansas. Abilene Tucker hits the ground running as she decides to take a look at the town first, rather than being met at the station by Pastor Shady Howard.
Her father, Gideon Tucker has sent her to stay with his old friend while he works on a railroad job for the summer.
Abilene is determined to learn more about her father and the discovery of a hidden cigar box with mementos from the past set her on the path of discovery about her Dad's early life. She feels he has abandoned her and she wants to know more about him in order to feel closer to him.
Little does she know that she will become involved with a spy hunt, and The Hungarian Woman, owner and operator of Miss Sadie's Divining Parlor. Miss Sadie is a fine story teller and weaves a tale mixed with fact and fiction. Throw a newspaper reporter into the mix, Hattie Mae Macke, and you'll find even more about the town of Manifest and it's residents who came from 21 different countries to settle and work in the mines.
MOON OVER MANIFEST by Clare Vanderpool is a wonderful blend of history, intrigue and love between a father and a daughter. Jump right in and get lost in another time and place. You'll be glad you did. Grades 5 - 8
