America's Worst Charities

You get a flyer in the mail for a charitable organization seeking donations for a cause that speaks to you. Maybe it's cancer, disabled police officers and firefighters, veterans, or diseases affecting children. The flyer features bold images and effective stories that move you to contribute. You take out your checkbook and pause before putting the pen to paper, thinking, how do I know if this charity is legit? How much of my money actually will go to help the cause itself?

Sadly, not all charities are as charitable as others, and some seem to be most charitable with their own solicitors, hence the list of America's Worst Charities. This list, a partnership between the Tampa Bay Times, Center for Investigative Reporting and CNN, showcases charities based on the amount of donations used to pay the professional solicitors charged with raising it. The result, as you see in the list, very small percentages of total donations ever reach those in need.

A fond farewell to Ray Harryhausen

Ray Harryhausen passed away last week at the age of 93. He was a groundbreaking pioneer in the world of special effects for films. His work inspired other filmmakers such as Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson, as well as a host of amateurs with clay and a camera in their parents basement.

There are a lot of sporting events being held in the Cleveland area this summer and fall, many of them attracting an international field of participants.  In chronological order, here are some activities that might be worth a look.

May 22-25 - 2013 MAC Baseball Tournament

Eight teams will compete for the Mid-American Conference Baseball Championship at All-Pro Freight Staduim in Avon, Ohio.  http://www.mac-sports.com/Championships/Baseball2013.aspx

May 29 - U. S. Soccer Men's National Team vs. Belgium - 8 pm

This is only the third time that the U.S. team has appeared in Cleveland - it will be a tune-up for the upcoming World Cup qualifying matches.  You can see the game at First Energy Stadium - Home of the Cleveland Browns (Cleveland Browns Stadium works better for me!).
