Hail To The YS Shelvers!

They're faster than a speeding bookcart. As knowledgeable of their sections as encyclopedias. Able to straighten shelves and help patrons while stepping over dropped toys and dodging little feet.

They're the shelvers of the Youth Services department, and we'd be totally lost without them.

Colleen works in the preschool area with the toddler books, picture books and easy readers. She's gracious and patient and always has kind words for one and all, and even when the department looks like a tornado hit it, she gets things organized fast. She's been with the children many years, and still has her hearing and sanity intact!

What's Now? 10x10

Once in a while we happen across a Web site that offers a new perspective on our world. Ten by Ten is one of those sites.

The creators of 10x10 explain their creation better than I can, "10x10â„¢ ('ten by ten') is an interactive exploration of the words and pictures that define the time. The result is an often moving, sometimes shocking, occasionally frivolous, but always fitting snapshot of our world. Every hour, 10x10 collects the 100 words and pictures that matter most on a global scale, and presents them as a single image, taken to encapsulate that moment in time. Over the course of days, months, and years, 10x10 leaves a trail of these hourly statements which, stitched together side by side, form a continuous patchwork tapestry of human life."

Dig to China?

Did you ever hear the old expression about digging a hole so deep you wind up in China? If you could dig all the way straight through the center of the Earth... where would you really wind up?

To answer that burning question, some folks have created a Web site that lets you select a place anywhere on the face of the Earth for digging. Double-click on the map at that point and click "Dig Here." The site will then show you where you'd wind up if you could dig straight on through.

Pathways to Parenting

The snow and cold are finally here! Now what? Time to hibernate and read! Gather your favorites, climb in a comfy chair with your cuddly kids, and settle in. If they would rather read by listening on their own, try an audio book or a downloadable book. Check our website for recommendations. After all that hibernating, I usually get hungry (as a bear!). If you're in the mood to get cookin', try these websites for treats:

Jiggers the Cat

Past patrons of Westlake Porter Public Library may remember the affectionate and playful mascot that took up residence at the library in the autumn of 1981. Jiggers appeared at the door one chilly day and quickly won the hearts of library personnel and patrons. The tabby adopted the building, making it her home. She joined the staff, doing her part to keep the old building free of mice and chipmunks and wandering the stacks at will.

WordWeaver just did her favorite thing.......read books!

The weather outside is cold and snowy so what better thing to do than read some good books?
I took home serveral over the weekend and plowed right through them.

FIREGIRL by Tony Abbott is a powerful story of the importance of recognition of another person, even in a very small way.

When the teacher told the class a new girl was coming everyone stirred. Before she opened the door for her the teacher said, " There is something you need to know about Jessica...."

The Power of "PLACE HOLD"

You may have noticed while surfing our catalog that, in addition to the listing and pictures offered when you search, that there is a small phrase in blue on the left-hand side of your screen. It reads "Place Hold".

"Place Hold" is wonderful. "Place Hold" is easy. Best of all, "Place Hold" means that you'll get what you want without having to look all over the place!

Simply click on "Place Hold" for the item you want, enter in your library card number and PIN, then click the "Place Hold" box. That's it! You'll be called when your item is available, and you can pick it up either at the front desk or the drive-up window.

WordWeaver loves to hear words as well as read them........

WordWeaver just found a wonderful website where you can go to download audio books for free! They are all in the public domain which means there's no copyright on them so they are fair game.

Go to librivox
You can browse their catalog for titles you'd like to hear. Many are adult books but there is a good number of children's classics such as ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND by Lewis Carroll, ANNE OF GREEN GABLES by L.M. Montgomery; ANDERSEN'S FAIRY TALES by Hans Christian Andersen; BLACK BEAUTY,THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A HORSE by Anna Sewell; TREASURE ISLAND by Robert Louis Stevenson and more.
