Astronomy Day 2007

Saturday, April 21 is Astronomy Day. Across the U.S. and in other countries special programs and activities will emphasize humanity's place among the stars.

Greater Clevelanders are fortunate to have one of the most interesting affairs of the day; that's thanks to a cooperative effort between a local science center, an area astronomy club, and NASA.

Celebrate Astronomy Day and learn more about the wonders of the universe from 10 AM to 11 PM during the annual "Star Gazing" extravaganza at NASA Glenn's Visitor Center. If the sky is clear an after-dark "star party" will feature views of celestial objects through telescopes set up at NASA Glenn by their astronomy club owners.

"Star Gazing" is presented in partnership with the Lake Erie Nature & Science Center's Walter R. Schuele Planetarium, the Cuyahoga Astronomical Association, and the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Solar System Ambassadors.

Admission is free. Access to the center is limited to U.S. citizens and adult visitors must present a government-issued photo identification to enter. Vehicles and bags are subject to inspection.

For more information about the NASA Glenn event, including times for talks and programs, visit: http://glennevents.grc.nasa.gov

The Cleveland Museum of Natural History will also have special programming and exhibits observing Astronomy Day. Hours: 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. See their site for program and admission details.

Time For Tumblebooks!

A new online storybook experience will soon be available in the Youth Services Department.

Tumblebooks is an online library of animated, talking picture books which teach kids the joy of reading in a format they'll love.

Tumblebooks are created by taking existing picture books, adding animation, sound, music and narration to produce an electronic picture book which you can read, or have read to you.

Spend Your Summer at Camp Wanareadit

Spring in Northern Ohio is an uncertain time; the skies never know whether to rain or shine, the flowers don't know whether to bloom or not, and you can go from your heaviest sweater to a tank top all in one day.

But amidst the confusion there is one certainty: that summer is coming. And for us library folks, that means it's time to gear up for Summer Reading!

Our program this year is titled "Trails and Tales." It's a camping/outdoors theme, and the Youth Services area will officially become Camp Wanareadit in June.

Nickel Plate Railroad

While attending church in 1883, the Clifton Aldrich family of Dover Township heard that the trestle across Rocky River had been completed, and the first train would be traveling through to Lorain. Mr. Aldrich hitched the team to the big farm wagon. Even before the locomotive whistle was heard down the line, the Aldrich children climbed into the wagon and rode to Bassett Road to watch the first train rumble through Dover. Along with the coming of the railroad, the town of Dover needed a station stop. Dover Center Road was chosen for the site. The Depot, also known as Dover Station, was built on the north side of the tracks.

WordWeaver celebrates Poetry Month........

It is April, well known as National Poetry Month. WordWeaver really loves poetry....words all bunched up or strung out in just the right way to say something lovely, or mad, or glad or sad.....well, you get the idea.

There are so many wonderful books of poetry in the juvenile department. There are anthologies of poetry (a collection) that are nice to read when you just want to browse a little. Some especially good ones are: A FAMILY OF POEMS: MY FAVORITE POETRY FOR CHILDREN: Caroline Kennedy; GOOD BOOKS, GOOD TIMES: Lee Bennett Hopkins; THE OXFORD ILLUSTRATED BOOK OF AMERICAN CHILDREN'S POEMS: Donald Hall; and SING A SONG OF POPCORN :Marcia Brown. Check out our poetry on cd which is really a treat when you can hear the poets reciting their own poetry. POETRY SPEAKS TO CHILDREN : Elise Paschen is a marvelous collection of poets every child should be introduced to.
