Cardboard is a sadly overlooked material. It encases things we receive in the mail, protects our "stuff" when we store or move it and winds up in the trash or recycling bin after its purpose is served.
But with a little imagination, cardboard can become just about anything. Just look at the picture book "Not a Box" by Annette Portis for many sweet, playful ideas.
Or check out Doug TenNapel's newest comic, "Cardboard", to see what happens when that underappreciated material gets put into trusting Cam's hands--and stolen away in order to do wrong.
I really can't do this story justice with mere description. It must be seen to be believed. TenNapel's illustrations are gritty, sharp-edged and raw, which suits the cardboard creations--brought to life with the aid of Cam's x-acto knife and some glue--very well. One thing I didn't like was resident bad guy Marcus's eyes--I kept wondering if he'd had his thyroid checked lately. But TenNapel is clever here as well--all of Marcus's grisly creations bear a resemblance to their maker, bulging eyes and all.
It's a creepy, fun fantasy world... just the kind of thing TenNapel excels at. It's a fun read--give it a try!
