Starting high school is bad enough for most kids—the schedules, the cliques, cafeteria food... But if you’ve been homeschooled your whole life, a public high school could be a truly frightening step to take.
Maggie, the heroine of Faith Erin Hicks’ Friends With Boys is about to take that step. Her older brothers have gone before her and keep saying she’ll be fine, but Maggie isn’t sure. She doesn’t know anyone besides her brothers, the high school is huge and hard to navigate…
And there’s one more teeny little problem that she hasn’t told anyone about, that could make or break her high school experience. Maggie is haunted, literally, by a ghost from the local graveyard.
Why is she being haunted? Is it just because the ghost has taken a liking to her? Is the ghost trying to replace Maggie’s absent mom? Does the ghost need something from Maggie? You’ll have to read the story and give me your opinion in comments!
Normally I don’t care for all black and white drawing, but Hicks does a really nice job of keeping the characters at the forefront of the frame—they aren’t fading into the background. Nice as well is the backgrounds—detailed, solidly outlined, but not so busy that you can’t follow the action.
I really liked Friends With Boys, and I hope this isn’t the last time we hear from Maggie and her clan!
