…on your first day of school, you got on the wrong schoolbus, which…
…took you to the wrong school, which…
…was in outer space???
Poor Bud, that’s exactly what happens to him on his first day in a new school in the fun adventure comic Earthling! By Mark Fearing. He’s transported to outer space and has to pose as a Tenarian exchange student because all of his classmates have been raised to view Earthlings as the enemy! Worse yet, Tenarians are supposed to be fantastic athletes—and Bud isn’t exactly a sports-minded kind of guy. Can he keep his secret? Can he ever get home?
The storyline is simple but allows for plenty of side plots and humor. For instance, Bud gains instant ‘street cred’ with his new alien friends because he eats the one thing on the cafeteria menu—NoxPaste Bites—which no one will touch because of their grossness. But they look and taste just like grilled cheese sandwiches to Bud, so at least he won’t starve while he’s stuck in space.
The drawings are simple, but fun. There’s a nice variety of alien body types and faces that, despite multiple eyes or pointed teeth, remain sweet and appealing. (Except for Principal Lepton, who reminds me in some ways of Henry J. Waternoose, the big mean boss from Monsters, Inc.)
These are fun characters and I am hoping for a sequel so we can spend more time together!
