I was a teenager during a great time in rock history, the 80’s. I saw the start of MTV, the premier of the Michael Jackson Thriller video, my sister learning the dance moves to Prince's 1999 and Madonna singing Like a Virgin.
I remember working at some little clothing store and going into the record store next door to see if they had the 45 for Like a Virgin. He gave me the record, saying she was a one-hit wonder, she won’t go anywhere. Ha! (I got Wham!’s Wake Me Up Before You Go Go the same way)
What surprises me lately, is that my children are listening to some of the greatest rock songs from the 80’s, mostly due to Guitar Hero, but even though that fad has gone away, they still pull out their dad’s “old” CD’s and listen to them.
Let me know who/what you are listening to:
For me, it’s Indie Rock. I listen to a lot on The Sting, 88.3 Berea. Artists like fun., Gotye, Imagine Dragons, and Alabama Shakes; I wouldn’t have known about them if I hadn’t been listening. Of course, with Gotye’s rise to fame, I’m sure I would have heard of him by now! I like discovering new artists and bringing their CD’s to the library for you to discover as well, come take a listen.
I don’t know why I’m on a Paul Simon kick lately, most likely due to a patron looking for classic 80’s songs. One of my favorites is Call Me Al with Chevy Chase, a classic in my book, also I’m crazy about Obvious Child.
Who are your favorites:
Mine? The Decemberists, Billy Bragg & Wilco, Mumford & Sons, Five for Fighting, First Aid Kit, Jason White (formerly of The Janglers), Hooters, Jimmy Buffett, and yes, embarrassingly enough, Enrique Iglesias (I know).
But what’s next? What’s your new favorite genre of music? New favorite artist?
It’s all up to you.
