People of the Book
by Geraldine Brooks
Hanna Heath, an Australian rare book expert, is recruited to analyze an ancient Jewish prayer book recently recovered in a Bosnian library. In her work she finds clues to the history of the manuscript dating back to the Spanish Inquisition. The author fills in the many stories over the centuries of the people who once possessed the book, but then lost it through misfortune and tragedy. Hanna also uncovers secrets from her own past connecting her to the fate of the treasure. It's another complex, yet beautifully written book from this Pulitzer Prize-winning author.
