Be careful what you wish for. All that Anya, the heroine of Vera Brosgol's spectacular "Anya's Ghost", wants is to fit in at school, to have lots of friends and to get that popular boy to notice her. She's not asking for much, is she?
Then one day, while taking a shortcut to school, Anya tumbles into a well, where a pile of bones produces the visible ghost of a young girl, Emily. When Anya is rescued, Emily comes along and becomes a constant companion, helping Anya with school work and social work--thanks to her prodding Anya gets up the nerve to approach Sean, a popular boy that she has a huge crush on. And he seems like he might be interested in her. Great!
Well, maybe not so great, as Anya finds out when she does a little research into her ghostly friend's past and gets a reality check about boys and popularity. Can she break free from Anya's ghostly clutches before she--or her family--comes to harm?
The storyline was excellent and I really liked the clarity of the illustrations. Watching the evolution not only of Anya, but Emily as well, as the story went on was interesting and--at times--creepy. I really liked this story and would recommend it to anyone suffering from a little teen angst.
Remember, there's only a few reading days left before school starts and reality kicks in again in the form of cafeteria food and homework. Enjoy the rest of the summer!
