WordWeaver's blog

WordWeaver just did her favorite thing.......read books!

The weather outside is cold and snowy so what better thing to do than read some good books?
I took home serveral over the weekend and plowed right through them.

FIREGIRL by Tony Abbott is a powerful story of the importance of recognition of another person, even in a very small way.

When the teacher told the class a new girl was coming everyone stirred. Before she opened the door for her the teacher said, " There is something you need to know about Jessica...."

WordWeaver loves to hear words as well as read them........

WordWeaver just found a wonderful website where you can go to download audio books for free! They are all in the public domain which means there's no copyright on them so they are fair game.

Go to librivox
You can browse their catalog for titles you'd like to hear. Many are adult books but there is a good number of children's classics such as ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND by Lewis Carroll, ANNE OF GREEN GABLES by L.M. Montgomery; ANDERSEN'S FAIRY TALES by Hans Christian Andersen; BLACK BEAUTY,THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A HORSE by Anna Sewell; TREASURE ISLAND by Robert Louis Stevenson and more.

WordWeaver Celebrates Black History Month by reading.........

THE HOUSE OF DIES DREAR by Virginia Hamilton. This book has been around since 1968 but I just never took the time to read it. Wow! Am I glad I finally did.

This story combines mystery, ghosts, new kid in town, and the fascinating history of the Underground Railroad. Did you know the state of Ohio had as many as 60,000 slaves pass through its underground railroads between 1812 and 1850?

WordWeaver Looks at the Future 12/28/06

WordWeaver's been checking out new movies for 2007 and 2008. At http://www.comingsoon.net and at http://firstshowing.net you can see what will be in production in the coming months.

The Newbery winning book, BRIDGE TO TERABITHIA by Katherine Paterson has been made into a film being released on Feb. 16, 2007.

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES hits the theatres in it's first computer animated film on March 23, 2007.

Friendship is WordWeaver's Word for the New Year.

Friendship is a very special gift. Sometimes people who think they won't like each other become the best of friends. All it takes is a chance. IVY + BEAN by Annie Barrows is a book about that very thing.
Book 1 introduces seven-year-old Bean and her new neighbor, Ivy. Bean is sure they will never be friends. How the pair become very best friends is a really fun story. Be sure to read Book 1 and Book 2 which is IVY + BEAN AND THE GHOST THAT HAD TO GO. Anyone in grades 1, 2 or even 3 would enjoy these stories.

Come have lunch with WordWeaver.

If you're in 4th or 5th grade WordWeaver would like to invite you to bring your own lunch (the library will provide the beverages and dessert)on Thursday, Dec. 28 from 1 - 2 p.m. We'll meet and eat and talk about this and that. Registration begins on Dec. 21.

WordWeaver would like to hear from you about things you might like to see at the library just for you. Crafts? Chocolate Fest? Lunch Bunch? Writer's Group? Banana Jousting? Online Activities?

WordWeaver is so excited!

WordWeaver just read a fantastic book that introduces a whole new kind of language. WOW! It is A PICKPOCKET'S TALE by Karen Schwabach.

"Some characters in this book speak an old London dialect called Flash or Flash-cant. Thieves invented this secret language so that they could hide what they were saying. If you have trouble understanding the characters speaking Flash-cant, turn to the glossary on page 219." This is a note from the author.

WordWeaver suggests......

For any child who loves to build things, there are two especially good books that came out this year that would be perfect gifts.

STEVEN CANEY'S ULTIMATE BUILDING BOOK by Steven Caney covers absolutely anything and everything you'd ever want to know about construction and engineering from facts to actual how-to's.

Another good read is SKY BOYS: HOW THEY BUILT THE EMPIRE STATE BUILDING by Deborah Hopkinson. This is an up close and personal look at how the then tallest building ever, was built. It's full of interesting facts and great illustrations.

WordWeaver Wonders......

You can try http://www.firstshowing.net. Guess what? Shrek the Third is coming out May 18, 2007. Be ready for some great laughs again. And the Transformers will be out July 4th, next year.
